A phrase affiliated with the legal terrain of permissions, contracts and the identities we subscribe to in our increasingly virtual living, Terms and Conditions explores the ubiquitous and elusive territory of networks of control and domination. Often suddenly and forcefully summoning our cursory attention, the phrase echoes our desensitization to the manner in which our encounters and interactions are monitored and moderated.
The exhibition brings together a range of contemporary artists whose specific projects offer insights into seismic processes of information dissemination that affect our worldview. From the disappearance of historical record and dissonant voices, to the use of propaganda tools and the generational loss of minority languages, the works offer multiple vantage points from which to observe and question how collective understandings are developed and resistance, quelled.
Artists: Adel Abdessemed, Adel Abidin, Hassan Sharif, Huda Lutfi, Jananne Al-Ani, Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige, Kader Attia, Moataz Nasr, Mona Hatoum, Raafat Ishak, Sharif Waked, Zineb Sedira.
